Welcome to Service Ceramics

THE STUDIO

Service Ceramics is a private studio nestled in the rainforest of North Queensland, Australia. The studio was established in 2023 and I produce drinking vessels for commission and in small batches.

All work is fired in electric kilns, however refurbishment is underway on a large production gas kiln in  2024.

I currently produce wheel thrown work on an electric wheel and Leech Style kick wheel.

How I work, and where I'm going..

Current Practice

I am an emerging ceramic artist working with stoneware clay to produce vessels, vases and sculptural forms. I consider myself a maker at heart and believe form & function to be fundamental.

My drinking ware is heavily influenced by both Japanese & Indian traditional tea vessels used for daily rituals. In my creative process, I start with researching the objects I am inspired by and making initial sketches. It is important to me to pay homage to these forms without appropriating any cultural elements. I draw inspiration from Eastern vessels and incorporate them into my own style to create functional pottery pieces. My pots are designed to show the history behind their making. I intentionally leave tool impressions, brush strokes & finger marks as a link between maker and end user. I want my vessels used but also explored. My goal is to instil moments of presence, quiet reflections in which the user and I connect as maker and patron.

Sculptural forms are born in the same manner, through concept exploration and initial sketching. I am influenced by the natural world and explore textures & shapes seen in my local tropical environment. Recent work (NorthSite gallery 2023) explored geometric extrusions manipulated to resemble organic shapes seen in the rainforest trails behind my studio. I believe the work I create should at its core be functional. I want my art to live with the consumer and be used, not just admired.

In 2024 I will be attending the prestigious Golden Bridge Pottery to study as an international student. I hope the skills learnt during this time will transition my work to larger-scale production and allow me to pursue my passion of wood firing.
